NHAI has rolled out a citizen-led cleanliness initiative that allows travellers to report unclean highway toilets and earn a ₹1,000 FASTag recharge in return. This smart incentive aims to ensure cleaner and more hygienic facilities across India’s highways by rewarding responsible travel and active participation.
NHEV (National Highway for Electric Vehicles) enthusiastically supports this progressive step by NHAI, as it perfectly aligns with its mission of building highways that are not just electric and efficient, but also clean, green, and traveller-friendly. Together, such initiatives bring us closer to creating sustainable corridors that redefine the highway experience for India’s commuters.
As part of its commitment to clean and green infrastructure, NHEV has integrated Air Toilets at its 3rd Generation Energy Stations. These waterless, eco-friendly facilities aim to provide hygienic amenities while aligning with the vision of smart, sustainable highways across the country.
Together, initiatives like these mark a step forward in redefining India’s highway landscape, blending technology, sustainability, and citizen participation to ensure cleaner, greener, and smarter travel corridors.
Unclean toilets in highways have long been a significant challenge for travellers, affecting children’s and the elderly’s hygiene and degrading the overall road travel experience.

NHAI’s initiative to reward citizens for reporting unclean toilets is a commendable step toward addressing this issue. We at NHEV already extend comfort, hygiene and confidence by building airport-standard waterless air toilets and urinals at our 3G energy stations after each 100 km to make upcoming e-highways more traveller-friendly as available on our national policy on roadside amenities ‘Hamsafar’ & ‘Rajmarg Yatra’ app.
