Airport operators, spearheaded by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), have been at the forefront of integrating sustainable energy solutions. A significant aspect of this effort involves installing solar power plants at various airports to generate and utilize green, renewable energy. This move aligns with the broader goal of enhancing sustainability within airport operations.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has played a pivotal role in advancing carbon neutrality at airports. Since 2014, 73 airports have successfully transitioned to 100% green energy, marking a significant milestone in their sustainability journey. MoCA has supported this transition by facilitating knowledge-sharing sessions to standardize Carbon Accounting and Reporting frameworks and by raising awareness about climate change mitigation. Airport operators with scheduled services are encouraged to progressively assess their carbon emissions and aim for carbon neutrality and net zero emissions.
Delhi Airport has notably led the way in this endeavor, achieving carbon neutrality in 2016 as part of the Airport Carbon Accreditation program. Additionally, some airports are enhancing their green energy usage further by procuring energy through open access channels.
