New Delhi, India, June 5, 2024
On World Environment Day, the National Highways for Electric Vehicles (NHEV) and the OMI Foundation have formalized a strategic partnership to develop a comprehensive roadmap for accelerating the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure across India.
The purpose of this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is to establish a collaboration between OMI and NHEV, with both parties serving as technical and knowledge partners for their respective products, including but not limited to NHEV’s E-Highway Pilot and OMI’s EV-Ready India Dashboard. Through this MoU, both the parties aim to jointly pave the way for widespread adoption of sustainable mobility innovations through the electrification of highways and the advancement of efficient charging infrastructure mechanisms.
This initiative is expected to eventually lead to increased adoption of electric trucks and electric buses, addressing the critical concern of charging infrastructure availability on long-haul routes. As one of the broader themes, this initiative aims to provide vital data to businesses, fleet operators, and policymakers. Through this and other such broad themes, this collaboration emphasises that e-mobility as an asset is profitable for all the stakeholders.
This partnership represents a transformative step in electrifying India’s transportation sector. Continuous data updates on infrastructure and fleets will support financial stakeholders in strategic planning across the EV ecosystem. This partnership will enable state governments to adopt evidence-based policies for electrifying their transportation sectors, fostering a seamless, advanced, and clean inter-state mobility on a federal interoperability pattern.
Abhijeet Sinha, National Program Director – Ease of Doing Business, Project Director- NHEV.
Aishwarya Raman, Executive Director at OMI Foundation, added, “Our collaboration with NHEV will leverage our expertise in data-driven policy research to support informed decision-making and strategic planning across the EV ecosystem. The development of evidence-based policy recommendations for charging infrastructure development as part of electrification of highways will be a game-changer, enabling data-driven decision-making for the entire EV ecosystem.”
This initiative represents a significant milestone in India’s journey towards sustainable transportation, providing critical insights that will accelerate EV adoption and contribute to a cleaner, greener future for the nation.
About: The NHEV Pilot Project
National Highway for EV (NHEV) is a pilot program adopted by Govt of India; supported by Ministry of Commerce & Industry GoI whereas Technical Trial supported by DST Ministry of Science and Technology to upgrade highways into E-Highways. Conducting technical trials to cover 2 pilot corridors, namely Delhi-Agra Yamuna Expressway (2021) and Delhi – Jaipur NH48 (2022) out of the 12 National corridors proposed by the Ministry of Power for electrification in its Guidelines and standards dated 14.12.2018 to be converted into E-highway. NHEV is built and funded on a Hybrid PPP Model called Annuity Hybrid E-Mobility (AHEM).
