Meta on Wednesday reported its second quarter earnings. The tech giant has announced that its shares have risen by almost 50 per cent, and the revenue is up by 22 per cent this quarter. And at the centre of all these notable milestones sits India. At the earnings call, Meta CFO Susan Li revealed that India is the largest market in the world in terms of usage of Meta AI. “We’re seeing particularly promising signs on WhatsApp in terms of retention and engagement, which has coincided with India becoming our largest market for Meta AI usage,” said Li.
Meta’s generative AI chatbot assistant, Meta AI, was first announced at the Meta Connect event in 2023. It started rolling out in India in June 2024 across WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. In other markets like Australia, Canada and New Zealand, Meta AI has been available since April 2024. The same month, Meta AI was also upgraded with the new Llama 3 model.
Like other AI assistants, Meta AI can manage daily tasks such as writing emails, summarising texts, and translations. The idea behind Meta AI is to simplify tasks for its users, functioning as a general-purpose assistant that can answer questions and provide real-time information powered by Google and Microsoft’s Bing.
Meta AI users can directly interact with the chatbot to generate text and images, summarise long texts, and perform writing tasks. Meta AI is integrated into personal and group chats on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, allowing users to seek advice or ask questions on these platforms.
The AI assistant offers advanced image generation technology to enhance creativity and can create animations. Additionally, Meta AI is embedded in the search bars of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, and can be accessed while scrolling through Facebook’s main feed.
In July, Meta also expanded its AI chatbot capabilities by adding support for seven new languages, including Hindi and Hinglish. This means, Meta AI users can now interact with Meta AI in Hindi, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish across WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook, with plans to include more languages in the future.
Last week, Meta also announced the new Llama 3.1 model, which is the latest version of Meta’s open-source large language model (LLM). Meta claims that Llama 3.1 has already surpassed the latest model of ChatGPT’s performance.
